Synology launches HAT5300 drives and new RackStation series
If there’s one thing we need more of besides happiness and money, it’s the fact that we all need more storage. Synology’s latest offerings, the HAT5300 enterprise hard drive series and RackStation units aim to fill that need for small-to-medium businesses.
Synology Rackstation series
Synology’s new Rackstation series consist of the 2U 12-bay RS3621RPxs and RS3621xs+ as well as the larger 3U 16-bay RS4021xs+ storage solutions that are intended for large-scale backups, ISCSi SAN storage, video surveillance and collaboration solutions.
The RS3621RPxsRackstation has a 6-core Intel Xeon CPU, 8GB DDR4 memory and 12 bays with a rated 233K random read IOPs and 117K random write IOPs. The slightly larger RS3621xs+ Rackstation runs on an 8-core Intel Xeon processor and has a similar 8GB DDR4 memory upgradable to 64GB, a similar 12 drive bays with a quoted 288K random read IOPs and 135K random write IOPs.
The top of the line new RS4021xs+ Rackstation has 16GB DDR4 ECC memory upgradeable to 64GB, 16GB DDR4 memory upgradable to 64GB, 16 drive bays, 289K random read IOPs and 146K random write IOPS. All the new Rackstation series storage solutions have a redundant power supply and two Gen 3.0 8x slots for NICs or Synology M.2 add-in cards.
The Rackstation solutions come with enhanced performance improvements over their immediate predecessors with the RS3621RPxs offering 68% higher random read IOPS, the RS4621xs+ has a 50% higher IOPs and the RS4021xs+ has a 21% higher IOPS.
Synology HAT5300 hard disks
The new Synology HAT5300 SATA hard drives are intended for enterprise use and are optimised for use with Synology hardware. The new drives have been extensively validated, with a quoted 274MB/s sustained data transfer rate and a 2.5 million hour mean-time-to-failure (MTTF) rating with workload support up to 550TB per year along with persistent write cache technology to minimise corruption in the event of a sudden power loss. The Synology HAT5300 hard disks come in 8TB, 12TB and 16TB sizes.
