Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 or Fold4? Which awesome Samsung foldable should you buy?

Since their launch a couple of months ago, Samsung’s new foldable phones for 2022 come in two flavours with the large phablet sized Galaxy Z Fold4 and the lighter, slimmer Galaxy Z Flip4. Each of them has its own unique charms and while both are powerful phones in their own right, they’re both intended for slightly different audiences and it’s quite a toss-up. Of course, the question remains – between the Galaxy Z Flip4 and Galaxy Z Fold4, which one should you buy?

What is the Galaxy Z Fold4 and Galaxy Z Flip4?

The Galaxy Z Fold4 and Galaxy Z Flip4 are Samsung’s latest foldable phones with the Galaxy Z Flip4 featuring a lighter, more compact chassis paired with flagship-grade hardware and a unique form factor that makes it ideal for TikToks as the front camera can be angled perfectly with the foldable display without the need to tote around a tripod.

You get a small 1.9-inch cover display for notifications and for selfies up front and unfolding the phone reveals a larger 6.7-inch SUper AMOLED 120Hz FHD+ folding display paired with stereo speakers, the top of the line Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 CPU, 8GB RAM and your choice of up to 512GB storage. The rear comes with a dual 12MP camera setup while the inner folding display has a 10MP selfie and video call cam. Keeping it powered is a 4,700mAh battery and is pleasantly light at 187g.

For power users who need to work on the go, the Galaxy Z Fold4 is the gold standard in portable productivity that melds a smartphone and a tablet into one compact form factor. Up front, you have a 6.2-inch 120Hz AMOLED display with a top mounted 10MP selfie camera for video calls. Unfold the phone and you get a huge 7.6-inch 120Hz foldable AMOLED display that’s effectively tablet sized, supports an S Pen stylus and has an almost-invisible 4MP under display camera.

Keeping it powered is the flagship Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 CPU, 12GB RAM and up to 1TB of storage. Where the Galaxy Z Fold4 excels its its ability for multitasking, allowing you to run up to three windowed apps simultaneously onscreen that are resizable at will.

For imaging duties, the Fold4 has a powerful rear triple camera array that is equivalent to that mounted on the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22 Plus – you get a 50MP F/1.8 camera and a 10MP camera with 3x zoom, both of which pack optical image stabilisation as well as a 12MP ultra wide angle camera with the whole affair offering up to 8K video capture. The Galaxy Z Fold4 is admittedly heavier though and at 263g but has a beefier 4,400mAH battery.

Why buy the Galaxy Z Flip4?

  • Pocket-sized flagship phone
  • Versatile Flex mode for video calls and watching movies
  • Compact sized combined with Samsung Pay makes it super easy to pay for stuff
  • Flagship performance
  • IP68 water and dust resistance
  • Dual cameras great for TikToks and everyday usage in tandem with Flex mode

The Galaxy Z Flip4 is the lighter of the duo, weighing just 187g and has a lighter, slimmer and more pocketable form factor which makes it delightful for all-day carry especially for those who like to travel light.

The Galaxy Z Flip4 also supports Samsung Pay so getting your coffee is simply a matter of swiping your phone on the readout which makes ditching your purse or wallet and leaving it at home easier than ever.

The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor can handle anything from work to gaming with the large foldable 6.7-inch display allowing you to get a flagship grade gaming experience that can tackle the likes of Genshin Impact and Call of Duty Mobile in a form factor little larger than a make-up compact.

Where the Galaxy Z Flip4 truly comes into its own though is its innovative Flex mode that lets you flip the phone – quite literally – halfway up so that you can watch movies wherever you go, handle video calls and film content without need for a stand.

Better yet, if you’re to capture video content, the primary camera on the rear 12MP rear camera array is OIS stabilised for super steady shots with the Flex mode allowing for time lapse and even more creative videos. You’re even able to hold the phone like a vintage camcorder for a comfortable experience capturing videos too. If you’re looking for a powerful, everyday phone, the Galaxy Z Flip4 is the one to go for out of the foldable duo.

Why buy the Galaxy Z Fold4?

  • Powerful Samsung DeX mode lets you use it like a PC with a keyboard, mouse and monitor
  • Protected with Samsung Knox security for critical data
  • Bigger, better triple camera array that can take 8K videos
  • Flex mode great for scenic shots and video calls
  • Has SPen stylus support for main folding display
  • IP68 dust and water resistance
  • Huge main folding display offers fantastic multitasking capabilities

The Galaxy Z Fold4 is a bit heavier and chunkier but what you get is effectively a pocket-sized tablet and smartphone hybrid with a veritable bag of tricks up its proverbial sleeves including one that lets it function as a powerful PC. Yup, you read that right.

While its multitasking abilities have been storied hither and yonder, the Galaxy Z Fold4 is able to pair up to a display via a HDMI cable or wirelessly via Miracast and then act as a desktop PC of sorts via DeX mode.

In DeX mode, you get a full desktop style interface including a taskbar at the bottom, all the apps you typically need for work like MS Office, Google Docs and the like, a file system and the like that’s akin to a traditional Windows 10 or 11 interface. While you’re able to use the Galaxy Z Fold4’s main display as both a touchpad and keyboard, you’re also able to pair a mouse and keyboard wirelessly for even more efficient productivity.

In keeping with its pedigree as a flagship Samsung phone, the Galaxy Z Fold4 also has Samsung Pay too though it’s a bit on the weighty side to wave about for payments unlike the Galaxy Z Flip4 but the option is indeed there. More importantly, it has support for Samsung’s Knox security which cements its role as a business phone and ensures that stored critical data is secure from tampering or malicious actors.
