Renders for Samsung’s Dex Pad for Galaxy S9 and S9+ surface

Earlier on, we reported that some chaps over at Galaxy Club spotted a trademark application at the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) from Samsung for an enigmatic ‘Dex Pad’. We speculated on just how it would improve on the existing Dex Dock for the Galaxy S9 and S9+ but had no idea how it looked. Well, wonder no longer as @evleaks has just unveiled renders of the new DeX Pad.

The original hockey-puck-shaped DeX dock  has, under the right circumstances, quite a bit of utility as it allowed you to harness the S8, S8+ or Note8’s beefy Exynos 8995 chip (or Snapdragon 835) and use it in a desktop environment for basic paperwork, videos and web browsing.

With the upcoming launch of the Galaxy S9 and S9+ at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Samsung will likely be unveiling the Dex Pad, the successor to the Dex dock which has, based on its EUIPO registration, a few improvements that include the use of the phone’s display as a trackpad or virtual keyboard.

Based on the renders, as surmised, the Dex Pad is a rectangular shaped dock that looks like it’s sized just right for a Galaxy S8 or S8+ and, if they’re following the usual game plan, the next successor to the Galaxy Note8 which will likely be dubbed the Note9 based on the earlier Snapdragon 845 line-up leak.

The base of the Dex Pad has a raised notch which houses a USB Type C port for charging and docking duties. Presumably, the Galaxy S9 will be slotted in here and laid flat for use as the aforementioned trackpad. Rather than a fixed height, it looks like the Type C port has some degree of vertical movement to allow for you to plonk in a phone with a casing.

The base has, based on the render, two USB ports, a HDMI port and another USB-C port which ought to be plenty for hooking up a monitor and keyboard. Notches in the base are indicative of cooling vents to keep the phone on ice when in use. According to Evan Blass, it’s possibly reverse compatible with the Galaxy S8, S8+ and Note8 but it’s still unconfirmed until its official debut at launch.

Last year at its Malaysia debut, the original Dex Pad cost a princely RM499, which is quite a bit of cash to unlock desktop functionality on the S8, S8+ and Note8 whereas some competitors have made it simply a matter of hooking their phone straight to a monitor via a HDMI cable to get a desktop environment. Hopefully, it’ll be more competitively priced at launch or more likely, be released as part of a preorder bundle. Stay tuned for more updates as we tuned to their upcoming Unpacked event about two weeks from now.
