As entertaining as music concerts are, they also represent an interesting challenge for casual photographers seeking to commemorate the experience with a snap or two or mayhaps a video from their smartphones. The challenging conditions – a crowd of jostling people, the dim lighting and often the distance from the stage for all but the most well heeled concert goers all combine to create conditions that would be a nightmare for all but a professional camera setup. These snaps from a recent Wang Lee Hom concert in Kuala Lumpur from the upcoming Huawei P30 series may just put paid to that conventional idea for good.

Huawei has released another series of photos taken from the recently concluded Wang Lee Hom concert at Stadium Merdeka in Malaysia just a few days ago on March 16 using the Huawei P30. The shots consist of a set of 12 images, collated based on the time each one was taken with a normal snap, a zoomed in shot and a super close-up image. Bar the inclusion of a tripod or some other unwieldy setup, the shots look impressive indeed from a technical and imaging perspective.

The standard snaps from the set give an idea of the distances involved from the photographer wielding the Huawei P30 from Wang Lee Hom and they are a good several dozen metres away with the singer barely viewable on the stage in the far distance.

Surprisingly, the close-up zoomed-in shots of the musical maestro himself are close enough that it looks to be taken from front-row seats though the consistency of the images based on the angles means that the photographer himself hasn’t shifted position at all. The Super zoomed in shots are even more of a technical feat as the Huawei P30 captures images zoomed in with enough detail as to make out Wang Lee Hom’s roguishly handsome features. In fact, you can even see fine details on on several of the zoomed in shots enough to make out the intricate ornamentation on his piano and his violin too.

If this is what the Huawei P30 is capable of, it’s certainly an impressive technical achievement indeed; more so for the conditions that these shots were taken in and the given results. Unfortunately little technical data has been released on the cameras or the level of zoom achievable on the Huawei P30 and its rumoured sibling the Huawei P30 Pro but these shots certainly have us waiting in anticipation to field test its capabilities.

How they stack up against other competitors in the field is also a matter of speculation but they are certainly a notch above what its current generation siblings such as the P20 series phones and the recently released Huawei Mate 20 Pro were capable of and both phones were considered to have upper echelon cameras with a vaunted 109 point score conferred by renowned testing site DxOMark.

What’s coming this 26 March 2019

Huawei will be officially taking the wraps off their Huawei P30 series and prior to this have shown tantalising glimpses of just what the phone is capable of. Their series of teasers have also showcased a new tagline – ‘Rewrite the Rules’ which can be interpreted in multiple ways. At least, on the imaging front, the Huawei P30 series of phones look like they may just set new standards for imaging quality in a smartphone.

What is certain though is that Huawei Malaysia has announced that they would be issuing their Huawei Backup drive as part of the free bundle for early birds who purchase the Huawei P30 series phones at launch. The Huawei Backup drive combines a 1TB hard drive that automatically backs up the images, movies, apps and other data on any Huawei phone running EMUI 9.0 along with charging it at the same time.

What’s more tempting though is that Huawei announced that this is just part of what the free bundle may potentially offer; prior examples of free bundles for early birds for the launch of the Mate 20 Pro have seen them issue DJI Tello drones, SoundStone speakers and more. For the upcoming launch of the P30 series phones they will likely offer an equally, if not more lucrative free bundle indeed. In any case, there’s not long to wait now. Stay tuned for what’s coming this 26 March 2019 in Paris, France!
