Nintendo’s mini SNES Classic is official and yours for US$80 in September

The original NES Classic Mini that was launched late last year had an extremely limited production run that saw people fighting to get their hands on it with scalpers having a field day.  Now, we get to do it all over again though this time in a more earnest fashion as Nintendo has just announced that they will be releasing the mini SNES Classic for US$79.99 which works out to about RM344 give or take change. The launch date is set to September 29 this year in the U.S though odds are you’ll get it via the grey market some time later locally.

The mini SNES Classic mimics the design of the US version of the console rather than the fetching Japanese version that had a rainbow array of buttons and a curved casing. It’s also a darned lot smaller than the original SNES. The package ships with two wired SNES controllers. For your money, hardwired into the console, you’re getting a killer line-up of some of the best games that ever graced the SNES. You get 21 games:

Super Mario World
Super Mario Kart
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
F-Zero
Super Metroid
Street Fighter II Turbo
Super Punch Out
Castlevania IV
Donkey Kong Country
Mega Man X
Kirby Super Star
Final Fantasy III (Which works out to as FF VI by the old numbering convention)
Kirby’s Dream Course
Star Fox
Star Fox 2
Yoshi’s Island
Super Mario RPG
Contra III: The Alien Wars
Secret of Mana
Earthbound
Super Ghouls ‘N Ghosts

This collection of games is a healthy representation of the capabilities of the SNES console including its then impressive Mode 7 graphics. There’s a good swath of some of the best RPGs ever available, racing games, one of the best fighting games to ever grace the console and several solid shooters too. Hopefully it won’t suffer the same supply shortages as the NES Classic mini that preceded it. More news as it develops.
