Huawei Mate Xs 2 with huge 7.8-inch foldable display coming to Malaysia

Huawei has now come up with their second foldable for the year that is intended as the heir to their earlier Mate Xs that debuted in 2020 with a whole raft of improvements in size, design and performance dubbed the Mate Xs 2. The phone was unveiled in a global launch in China and Huawei Malaysia has just issued a statement that the phone will arrive in the country in the near future.

What is the Huawei Mate XS 2

Much like its predecessor, the Mate Xs 2 adopts an outward folding display which unfurls to offer a 7.8-inch True Chroma Foldable panel while using aerospace grade aluminium, fibreglass and a special grate of ultra-light, high-tensile strength steel to shave the weight down to just 255g.

This time around, the True Chroma Foldable display has an almost seamless crease when fully unfolded on account of Huawei’s improved Falcon Wing Hinge design. According to the brand, the display will be as ‘flat and smooth’ as a mirror. It will also feature a unique Nano Optical layer that reduces light reflections for easier readability under direct sunlight.

In terms of specifications, Huawei has shared that the 7.8-inch True-Chroma Foldable DIsplay on the Huawei Mate Xs 2 will have a 2,480 x 2,200 pixel resolution with a 120Hz refresh rate and a tall 8:7:1 aspect ratio. It’s also quoted to be highly responsive as well with a 240Hz touch sampling rate. The display also packs a pair of stereo speakers too.

Display aside, Huawei states that the foldable will have a flagship Snapdragon 888 processor as well as a 4G modem with your choice of up to 12GB RAM and up to 512GB of storage. The phone will run their own Harmony OS  under the hood. Keeping it powered is a 4,600mAh battery with fast 66W charging and a Graphene layer to effectively vent heat.

On the imaging front, the camera features a True Chroma Camera system which will be built around a primary 50MP True Chroma camera akin to those used in the P50 Pro paired with their Huawei XD Optics tech which uses AI to enhance image clarity. It also apparently has a 8MP 3x zoom telephoto with OIS camera and a 13MP ultra wide angle camera. For video calls, the phone features a 10MP selfie camera on the main display in a small punch hole.

At launch, they announced the following configurations for the China market:

8+256GB: ¥9,999 (about US$1,500/about RM6,598)

8+512GB: ¥11,499 (aboutUS$1,750/about RM7,587)

12+512GB: ¥12,999 (about US$1,950/about RM8,577)
