Eldest Souls is all epic boss battles with luscious pixel art and set for 29th July release

Games with pixel art have been enjoying a renaissance of late and indie publisher United Label and developer Fallen Flag Studio’s latest game, Eldest Souls looks like a very promising blend of this retro-classic aesthetic combined with that most vexing and rewarding of battles – the boss fight.

Minus to exotic world building rigmarole, you play as a lone warrior in a fantasy world out to permanently decommission a pantheon of Old Gods lurking in a citadel that have been up to naughty things like wrecking the world. It’s up to you to saunter your way in, deliver sufficient blunt instrument trauma to persuade them to desist or shuffle off this mortal coil and generally save the world.

Rather than a horde of mooks, the primary gameplay here is taking out these Old Gods and each one, in true Megaman style, confers powers and bonuses after you curbstomp them. The trouble is beating them. According to Fallen Flag Studios, the game will also have multiple potential builds based on these powers and there will be storylines and NPCs to chase up in the background in between fights at your own pace.
