As far as cordless vacuums go, Dyson’s range of dust-busting handheld vacs have held pride of place as among the most powerful and desirable examples of their kind with their V11 Absolute leading the pack.
Dyson hasn’t sat idle on their laurels though and they’ve just debuted something that is just as powerful as the V11 but lighter and slimmer too with a design that’s ideal for Malaysian homes. Meet the spanking new Dyson Digital Slim.
The cleaning challenge in Malaysian homes
By and large, most of us living in Malaysia tend to walk barefoot in our homes on hard floor surfaces. That in itself represents unique challenges as there’s a lot of fine dust that accumulates all over the floor which the more sensitive among us can feel underfoot.
There is, after all, a reason to leave our shoes at the front door in order to prevent all that dust and dirt from outdoors tracking in but some inevitably accumulates around the house which needs a more thorough and more frequent clean.
The other interesting challenge is that Malaysians aren’t all exactly built like hulking quarterbacks. Most of us also veer on the average side of the height spectrum. All this means that an ideal vacuum for Malaysian homes needs to have the ability to be used frequently and be light and compact enough yet be powerful enough to use without ergonomic issues.
All these challenges meant creating a new cordless vacuum that had to weigh less, perform just as well if not better and be able to perform a deep, effective clean on hard flooring.
Dyson Digital Slim – What’s New
The terrifyingly powerful Dyson V11 Absolute+cord-free vacuum remains as one of, if not the most powerful example of cordless, man-portable house cleaning tech that money can buy but it had its slight foibles for some. It was rather heavy to use one-handed, which made it ungainly to wield for more petite-sized people especially in high ceilinged locations and hard-to-reach areas.
After getting feedback from a host of users around Asia, Dyson did what they do best – apply their terrifyingly good engineering know-how to address the problem which is where the Digital Slim comes into the picture.
“To make a strong-performing vacuum it must effectively capture fine dust and small debris and maintain constant powerful suction. In our latest machine, we set about going even further, seeking to condense our proprietary cleaning technologies, making our lightest machine to date while refusing to sacrifice cleaning performance. The Dyson Digital Slim vacuum is both 20% smaller and 30% lighter, with no loss of suction,” said James Dyson, Founder and Chief Engineer.
Lighter and Slimmer
When compared to the V11 Absolute, the Digital Slim is almost like a slim sports car next to the muscle car that is the V11. The chassis of the Dyson Digital Slim is 20% smaller and 30% lighter compared to the V11, weighing just 1.9kg compared to the V11’s somewhat hefty 2.9kg carry weight on account of an equally powerful but more efficiently engineered new Hyperdimium motor and a redesigned and more compact 11 scrolled cyclone design that sucks fine dust better.
It’s not just weight savings either, they’ve rebalanced the design so that it’s much easier to wield one-handed as it’s balanced closed to the trigger guard rather than being forward heavy like the V11, which needed a two-handed grip to use, especially for more petite users. The way air comes into the Digital Slim has also had a major rethink as they’ve created a more direct route for airflow and thus better performance.
They’ve even reengineered the cleaner head too, weaving in carbon fibre filament and felt straight onto the attachment roller while crafting the whole thing of light aluminium to make it 40% lighter while having a 20% lower cleaning profile. The end result? It’s much easy to go under narrow gapped furniture like under beds and chairs and it’s even easier to target high places like the tops of cupboards and ceiling corners as it’s a lot lighter.
Revamped Hyperdimium Motor
While all this is fine and dandy, the true power behind the Digital Slim is its Hyperdimium motor. It sounds like something straight from Star Wars and it may possibly power up the Millenium Falcon in some fashion but it’s otherwise pure Dyson engineering as it’s a digital motor that equals the V11 in performance in a more compact design with a powerful 120,000rpm with a ceramic shaft that’s three times harder than steel.
Dyson has also retained the same level of cleaning power with the ability to capture 99.97% of the microscopic particles it sucks up down to a level of 0.3 microns which means most allergens and fine dust, pet hair and the like.
A removable battery and rinsable extensions for the Dyson Digital Slim!
Remember that part about frequent cleaning? The Dyson Digital Slim has the biggest game-changer of them all – a removable battery that offers about 80 minutes in eco mode. So yes, you can now finally buy and hotswap a succession of batteries to continue cleaning uninterrupted if so needed.
But wait, it gets better. Seeing as how we are, for lack of a better word, a bit ‘malas’ when it comes to cleaning, the Dyson Digital Slim has been made even easier to clean as you can just toss the brush bar, dust bin, crevice tool and the pre-filter into the sink for a good quick rinsing.
