Apple has just unveiled their latest iPhone 12 series phones that come in four different sizes, all of which are equipped with 5G connectivity and their ultra powerful A14 Bionic processor. Meet the new iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro and the mammoth iPhone 12 Pro Max.
Key to their enhanced performance is their in-house A14 Bionic CPU that’s built on a 5nm process and is quoted to have the fastest CPU and GPU by up to 50% compared to the fastest competing smartphone chips. The A14 Bionic also has a 16-core Neural Engine capable of tackling 11 trillion operations per second.
On top of the aforementioned 5G connectivity, the new iPhone 12 range feature crisper Super Retine XDR displays, beefed up cameras and, interestingly enough, MagSafe casings and wireless chargers for bungle proof charging as you needn’t have to fiddle around to find the sweet spot for it to charge properly.
The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini have similar rear dual camera systems while the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max both share a larger rear triple camera array, all of which have new computational photography features and enhanced video capture performance.
One thing to note is that the iPhone 12 range will not ship with chargers or EarPods which you will have to buy separately though they still toss in a USB-C to lightning cable to charge your phone.
Here’s how they stack up…
iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini
The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini come in 5 different colourways with your choice of white, black, blue, green and red. The smaller iPhone 12 mini sports a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR Full HD+ (2,340 x 1080 pixels) display while the slightly larger iPhone 12 has a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with 2,532 x 1,170 pixels resolution. Both iPhones are also rated IP68 for water resistance.
Storage variants for both the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 run to your usual 64GB, 128GB and 256GB.
The rear camera consists of a primary 12MP F/1.6 camera with OIS and a 7-element lens that lets in 27% more light than the previous generation and a secondary 12MP F/2.4 ultrawide angle camera with a 120-degree field of view.
The whole array is capable of offering an enhanced Night mode for low light shots as well as capturing 4K@60fps video as well as Dolby Vision HDR@30fps on account of Apple’s beefed up Deep Fusion computational photography tech. The front consists of a single 12MP F/2.2 selfie camera.
Prices start from RM3,399 for the 64GB version of the iPhone 12 mini while the iPhone 12 starts from RM3,899 for the 64GB version.
iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max
The iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max come in 4 different colours that consist of blue, gold, graphite and silver. The iPhone Pro features a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display while the large iPhone 12 Pro Max features a 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR display. Both phones also have IP68 dust and water resistance and come with their new A14 Bionic processor.
The enhanced triple camera array of the iPhone 12 Pro retains the 12MP F/1.6 OIS enabled camera and the 12MP F/2.4 ultrawide angle camera as the iPhone 12 but adds in an additional 12MP F/2.0 telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom and OIS along with a LIDAR sensor for 6x faster autofocus capabilities under low light. HDR video with Dolby Vision capture is also beefed up to 60fps too versus the iPhone 12’s 30fps on its dual camera which means much smoother footage.
The iPhone 12 Pro Max features the best hardware that Apple has to offer and is a grade more powerful than what the iPhone 12 Pro’s cameras have to offer. The primary 12MP F/1.6 camera has a 47% larger sensor which ensures an 87% improvement in low-light shots along with sensor-shift OIS for judder free shots. The secondary 12MP ultra wide angle camera and the LIDAR sensor are the same as the iPhone 12 Pro but they’ve beefed up the 12MP F/2.2 telephoto camera to have 2.5x optical zoom.
Storage capacities for the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max come in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB capacities. The iPhone 12 Pro 128GB starts from RM4,899 while the iPhone 12 Pro Max 128GB starts from RM5,299.
