Acer Aspire 5 and 3 launched in Malaysia with prices from RM2,399

The ongoing Acer roadshow at Midvalley mall has also seen the brand debut two new additions to their premium ultrabook series notebooks in the form of their Aspire 3 and Aspire 5 along with the new Acer PM161Q 15.6-inch portable monitor.

Acer Aspire 3

The Acer Aspire 3 comes in two different configurations for the Malaysia market though both have a 15.6-inch 1080P TFT LCD display, 4GB of DDR4 RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce MX230 GPU with 2GB of GDDR5 VRAM. Both have a similar array of ports that include a pair of USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports, a single USB 2.0 port, a HDMI 2.0 port, an Ethernet port and an SD card reader. On paper, the Acer Aspire 3 is rated for 7 hours of battery life and regardless of configuration, the notebooks max out at 1.9kg while remaining 19.95mm thin.

Where both Acer Aspire 3 variants differ is in terms of storage and processor. The more premium variant comes with an Intel Core i7-8565U and a 256GB PCIe SSD which retails for RM3,099 and is only available in a shade of Indigo Blue. The more affordable variant retails for RM2,399 and comes with an Intel Core i5-8265U processor and a 1TB hard disk. In terms of colour choices it can be acquired in Indigo Blue, Sparkly Silver and Charcoal Black.

Acer Aspire 5

The Acer Aspire 5 ships in two configurations and has several points of commonality in terms of hardware between both variants though they differ primarily in terms of processor and available colour schemes for the external chassis. Externally, the Aspire 5 sports a revamped aluminium top lid and weighs 1.5kg regardless of configuration while offering a 10% smaller footprint compared to its predecessor from last year while offering slimmer bezels.

The higher end variant of the Acer Aspire 5 has a 14-inch Full HD TFT LCD display, an Intel Core i7-8565U processor, 4GB DDR4 RAM, a 256GB PCIe SSD and an NVIDIA GeForce MX250 graphics card with 2GB GDDR5 VRAM. Battery life for this particular variant is rated at up to 7 hours in the field and it retails for RM3,099 with only one colour variant in Charcoal Black. 

The more affordable variant of the Aspire 5 retails for RM2,499 and has much of the same hardware bar a slightly lower specced Intel Core i5-8265U processor and longer rated battery life at 12.5 hours. It also comes in 3 different colours – Indigo Blue, Pure Silver and Charcoal Black.

Acer PM161Q Portable Monitor

Portable monitors are in vogue and Acer’s latest addition to their line-up is a 15.6-inch portable display that weighs a mere 970g or so while offering up a Full HD 60Hz display with a 7ms response time and a 170-degree viewing angle and 200 nits brightness. The PM161Q is juiced by a USB Type-C port and also allows you to port a feed from a laptop or smartphone too which makes it a very handy secondary display. The Acer PM161Q retails for RM599 and will be available beginning of September.
