Xiaomi is best known for making some of the most value-packed phones in the business and their latest incarnation of their workhorse Redmi Note series phone, dubbed the Redmi Note 5 was just launched today in Malaysia.

The Redmi Note 5 integrates a huge 5.99-inch display that has a crisp 2,160 x 1080 pixel touchscreen display with a brilliant 1500:1 aspect ratio, 450 nits brightness and the ability to display up to 83% of the NTSC colour gamut. In vogue with today’s latest design trends, the Redmi Note 5’s touchscreen has an 18:9 aspect ratio which makes watching content like movies and gaming a delight.

Under the hood, the Redmi Note 5 is powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 processor that is built on a 14nm process and which integrates eight Kryo 260 cores that run at up to 1.8GHz. This is paired with 4GB DDR4 RAM and 64GB of expandable storage via a hybrid SIM card slot.  A slightly more affordable variant exists with otherwise identical hardware bar slightly pared down storage at 3GB DDR4 RAM and 32GB of expandable storage.

The rear camera setup consists of a dual camera array with sensors sourced from Samsung that pairs up a 12-MP f/1.9 camera with 1.4um micropixels paired up with a secondary 5-MP f/2.0 camera with 1.12um micropixels along with Dual Pixel autofocus, to offer faster, more accurate snaps as well as better shots in low light. Of note is that this is the first time that a dual camera array has been integrated in a Redmi Note series phone.

The front selfie camera consists of a single 13-MP selfie camera paired with a dedicated front-facing selfie flash for low light scenarios.

Much like many competing phones, the Redmi Note 5 also has an AI-based computing engine that uses semantic segmentation and a deep learning algorithm to offer more accurate edge detection to take better bokeh shots on both the front and rear camera. The phone also offers HDR photography not just on the rear but the front snapper too.

Keeping it running is a huge 4,000mAh battery rated to offer eight hours of solid gaming. Other mod-cons include a 3.5mm audio jack and nippy 5V/2A fast charging.

Both variants of the Redmi Note 5 will hit stores on 5 May nationwide in black, gold and a shade of light metallic blue with the 4GB RAM/64GB retailing for RM999 while the 3GBRAM/32GB version retails for RM799.
