Everyone is jumping on the crowdsourcing bandwagon and a local outfit in Malaysia has decided to take the lead in that regard by launching Malaysia’s first crowdsourcing app for medical bills dubbed Life Engineering.

The app relies on the fellow goodwill of participants who all pay an annual participation fee of RM100 and an additional RM100 into a crowd sharing pool funded by the TMF Group, an international financial and administrative services provider who has been appointed as an external trustee for the pool of funds.

Should any members who have subscribed to the Life Engineering app need to pay for a medical bill, they can present their virtual membership ID from the Life Engineering app to a selected panel hospital for treatment or admission. This request for payment is then reviewed by a professional medical auditor appointed by Eximius Medical Administration Solutions Sdn Bhd. Once it gets approved, Life Engineering pays the medical bill which is then reimbursed by the pool of funds managed by the TMF Group.  It’s a bit of a lofty idea but essentially they aim to offer an alternative to medical insurance.

The general idea here is that the larger the pool of participants, the lower costs will be for everyone involved. Costs vary from month to month and on the number of sharers there are though this is capped at a maximum contribution of RM50 per month and a maximum contribution per user of RM600 per year. There are some other caveats as well: only Malaysian citizens between the ages of 8 to 40 can sign up at the moment and treatment can only be done at 86 private and 135 public hospitals hospitals in Malaysia though this also covers specialist centres like the National Heart Institute of Malaysia and the Tun Hussein Onn National Eye Hospital. Also, participants also need to be healthy and smokers will need to pay an additional 1.2x on their fees.

The app is currently available on the Google Play store and the first 2,000 registrants will have the RM100 annual fee waived for life! For more details you can visit the official website here.
