Netflix unveils 17 new original shows for Asia

Things are getting a bit more interesting with Netflix. Fresh off their recent experimental release of an RM17 per month tier for mobile-only subscribers in Malaysia, they have just serendipitously announced 17 original productions from Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, India and South Korea across multiple genres from anime to side-splitting comedies to whet the appetite of even the most discerning viewers. Here are several of the more interesting Netflix new shows that caught our eye from the line-up that was announced in their  “See What’s Next: Asia” event that was recently concluded in Singapore.

As you would expend from the birthplace of anime, Japan is bringing in an anime version of Pacific Rim which has two siblings piloting an abandoned Jaeger to find their missing parents. It is too early to tell but it looks like a revamped take on the traditional ‘ giant robot genre’ which has plenty of plot potential seeing the rich Pacific Rim universe that the two movies and comics have crafted though the question does remain though, who leaves a multi gazillion dollar war machine lying around unattended anyway? Showrunners include Craig Kyle of Thor: Ragnarok fame and Greg Johnson from X-Men:Evolution. Swing by here for a closer look – www.netflix.com/pacificrimanime

Another more promising proposition is an anime version of Altered Carbon though where it takes place in the original shows timeline has not been mentioned just yet. It features Tsukasa Kondo and Dai Sato as writers with Anima animating the show. You can swing by here for more details www.netflix.com/alteredcarbonanime

From Thailand, Netflix is issuing an unusual show that involves a cadre of high-school students in a remote island surviving a tsunami and figuring out just what to do next. The show is directed by Sophon Sakhaphisit and produced by GMM Grammy and H2L Media Group. www.netflix.com/thestranded

One particularly interesting highlight at the showcase is a Taiwanese original Triad Princess where a girl wishing to step out from the shadow of her Triad dad ends up as a bodyguard for a famous actress which leads to all manner of hilarity. www.netflix.com/triadprincess
