Moto Z and Moto Z Play launched in Malaysia

The Moto Z and Moto Z Play phones are the latest take on the customisable phone concept,both of them offer an interchangeable, compatible array of optional backplates that expand their functionality in different ways dubbed Moto Mods.

Essentially, both phones have a similar magnetic dock and are similarly sized so Moto Mods are able to work with either device off the bat.

Both phones are now available on preorder on 11street and Lazada starting from 4th November and the first 50 preorders for each site will get a free JBL SoundBoost speaker mod on the house. Both phones along with the Modo Mods will be available nationwide on storefronts by the end of November.20161031_115733

Moto Z
The new Moto Z is 5.2mm thin, which, on paper, currently makes it the world’s thinnest smartphone. The chassis is hewn from machined aluminium and stainless steel and is effectively splashproof. In terms of hardware, the Moto Z sports a 5.5-inch Quad HD AMOLED display while a Snapdragon 820 1.8GHz quad-core processor runs under the hood paired with 4GB RAM and 64GB of storage expandable via a microSD card. The rear comes with a 13-MP camera with F/1.8 aperture, optical image stabilisation and laser autofocus to capture snaps and 4K@30fps video or 1080p@60fps video.

The front comes with a 5-MP selfie camera paired with a front-facing flash and wide angle lens along with a squarish fingerprint reader at the base of the phone that doubles as a home button. A built-in 2,600mAh battery offers a day’s worth of battery life while a USB Type C port keeps it juiced up with 15 minutes of charging offering, according to Motorola, 7 hours of power. The Moto Z comes in two bundles – a White/Fine Gold casing with a free bundled Silver Oak Moto Mod casing or Black/Lunar grey casing paired with a free Charcoal Ash Moto Mod casing for RM2,699 for either bundle.

Moto Z Play
The Moto Z Play is slightly chunkier and heavier with better battery life and slightly more modest specs while coming in at a cheaper price. The phone comes with a Snapdragon 625 2GHz quadcore processor, an Adreno 506 GPU, 3GB RAM and 32GB of onboard storage expandable via a microSD card.

The Moto Z Play has a similarly sized 5.5-inch Super AMOLED display but is dialled down to a still sharp 1080P, 403ppi resolution for enhanced battery endurance. The rear camera comes with a 16-MP sensor, an F/2.0 aperture  along with laser autofocus, phase detection autofocus and a dual LED flash.

The front comes with a 5-MP camera with a front-facing LED flash. A huge 3,510mAh battery offers 45 hours of battery life and their fast-charging TurboPower charging tech aims to offer 8 hours of power with 15 minutes of charging time. A fingerprint reader at the base unlock access to the phone. The Moto Z Play comes in two different bundles differentiated by colour. One comes in White/Fine Gold with a Silver Oak Moto Mod casing and another in Black/Silver with a Charcoal Ask Moto Mod for RM1,799.

JBL SoundBoost Speaker Moto Mod
The JBL SoundBoost Speaker Moto Mod latches on to the back and augments the phone with a pair of 3W 27mm speakers. An integrated 1000mAh keeps it powered for about ten hours of use and it recharges via a USB Type C port. It retails for RM599.

Hasselblad True Zoom Moto Mod
This interesting upgrade turns your phone into a bona fide camera. After latching onto the back of either phone, it comes with a 12-MP sensor with a BSI CMOS sensor and an F/3.5 – 6.5 aperture with OIS and EIS.

It also has an impressive 10x optical zoom and lets you take images both in JPEG and RAW. It costs RM1,299.



Insta-Share Projector Moto Mod
This phone-sized pico projector has the ability to throw up a 70-inch WVGA (480o) resolution image with a 400:1 contrast ratio with a 50 lumen bulb. A built-in 1,100mAh battery augments usage to allow for an hour or so of projection time. The Projector retails for RM1,399

Moto Mod Style Shells
These vanity plates offer a different look and feel to your Moto Z or Moto Z Play. The textured ones – Black Leather, Charcoal Ash, Silver Oak and Washed Oak retail for RM79. The plainer ones – Crimson Ballistic Nylon and Black Herring – are made of polycarbonate and retail for RM59.
