Designed as a smartphone with a predominant emphasis on gaming, the aptly named honor Play comes with quite an array of hardware to fulfill its purpose in a rather capable fashion.
Crammed into a machined unibody aluminium casing is a notched 6.3-inch FHD+ IPS LCD touchscreen with 2,340 x 1080 pixels resolution, the HiSilicon Kirin 970 processor running Android Oreo 8.21 overlaid with their EMUI 2.1 user interface, 4GB RAM and 64GB of expandable storage.
Where it aims to one-up the competition as a gaming centric phone is its introduction of what it calls as GPU Turbo mode that their boffins say helps in delivering better frame rates and higher battery efficiency when gaming to the tune of 60% stated better performance and 30% lower battery drain than on a non-GPU Turbo equipped model. Details are scarce as to its exact capabilities or how it does so bar the fact that GPU Turbo is specific to the Kirin 970 and consists of a hardware and software solution working in tandem together to deliver the aforementioned results. The GPU Turbo upgrade is slated to be retrofitted via an online update this month to the Honor View 10 and Honor 10.
Another novel feature of note on the honor Play is its emphasis on including what it calls ‘4D gaming’ support which is essentially directional haptic feedback based on what game you play for more visceral gaming feedback from incoming and outgoing hot lead. At launch, PUBG is one of the games to support this mode with more titles down the line later on.
Other mod-cons in the midrange, gaming-centric honor Play include a rear dual camera array which blends a 16-MP f/2.2 camera with a 2-MP f/2.4 depth sensor along with AI-enhanced photography that can detect up to 22 different and distinct objects before helping to select the best modes for optimum results.
The front has a 16-MP f/2.0 selfie shoot with the ability to use 3D project lighting for more unique looking selfies. All this is charged by a 3,650mAh battery with fast charging.
