Honor 8 camphone launched in China from RM1193

Huawei’s spinoff sub-brand Honor took the wraps off their latest flagship, the Honor 8 in a launch in China yesterday. The phone cribs a few notes off their flagship P9 that was launched recently though at a lower price tag; it only costs CNY1,999 which works out to a very reasonable RM1193.

The Honor 8 comes with a 5.2-inch Full HD touchscreen display up front sheathed in 2.5D glass and runs Android 6.0 paired with their latest EMUI 4.1 user interface overlaying it on a Kirin 950 Octacore processor. It’s just a step behind the P9’s newer Kirin 955 processor though the Kirin 950 octacore proceossor is a very capable contender in its own right with a quartet of A53 1.8GHz cores for general work and a quartet of Cortex-A72 2.3GHz cores to handle the heavy lifting.

The rear camera setup emulates the P9 and the P9 Plus in that it comes with a dual 12-MP camera setup each with f/2.2 aperture. One camera is able to take images in colour while the other takes shots in mono, combining them for better detail and colour rendition as well as some rocking mono shots. The front camera is an 8-MP job with an f/2.4 aperture.

The Honor 8 also comes with a fingerprint reader on the back that not just allows for access to the phone but also acts as a shortcut to turn on the rear flash as a flashlight, fire up the camera and more. It also sports NFC, an IR blaster up top  and VoLTE support so it’ll play just fine with Yes 4G’s newly launched networks. The phone comes with a hybrid SIM card tray so you can opt for either two SIM cards or one SIM and one microSD card.

Charging duties are also taken up by a USB Type C port for the built-in 3000mAh battery. Externally, it comes in a fetching glass and metal finish that comes in five different colours – Pearl White, Sunrise Gold, Midnight Black, Sakura Pink and Sapphire Blue. The phone comes in multiple variants that vary in terms of onboard storage and RAM with the highest end model offering 4GB RAM and 64GB of expandable storage. The 3GB/32GB variant is the cheapest on offer at CNY1999 (RM1193) while the midrange 4GB/32GB variant clocks in at CNY2299 (RM1373) and the aforementioned flagship 4GB/64GB model retailing for CNY2499 (RM1492) with Honor taking preorders now and the devices hitting the China market on 19 July. There’s no official word on when the Honor 8 phones will officially launch in Malaysia, what price it will retail at nor what variants will hit the local market but we’ll let you know when it does.
