Of particular note was a live demonstration by Au Kok Kean, Solution Consulting Manager for Fortinet Southeast Asia and Hong Kong where he demonstrated a comprehensive cyber attack on a target server running Ubuntu that is targeted with the Apache struts vulnerability before it is infiltrated and then infected with a modified cryptojacking mining script that makes PCs that connect to said server surreptitiously perform cryptomining work. Fortinet also shared offerings from their arsenal of cybersecurity solutions to address the threat and best practices prevent it from happening in the future.

Based on our analysis, the trend is increasing and hackers are still trying to actively scanning servers to see if the Apache struts exploit is still present and it is still an ongoing threat in cyberspace. Malaysia-wise, i think the Apache Struts exploit is still one of the top five exploits occurring in Malaysia. Currently, Malaysia is quite well protected and most IT concerns already have IPS deployed. In the Malaysia context there is currently no massive breaches as yet due to this vulnerability but it remains a threat,” said Kok Kean. For more on Fortinet swing by www.fortinet.com
