Details on next-gen Snapdragon 835 processor unveiled

When it comes to the processors powering your smartphone, chip vendors are constantly striving for more performance in a more efficient factor and in a smaller footprint. Now, details of Qualcomm’s latest processor that will power the next generation of flagship phones have been leaked via a series of slides unveiled by Videocardz.com that reveal tantalising aspects of the next-gen Snapdragon 835 processor.

Presumably slated for an official launch at CES 2017, the Snapdragon 835, at least what can be gleaned from the official Qualcomm blogpost and the slides reveal that the new chip will be more power efficient , offer faster LTE connectivity, deliver faster performance and have the hardware to offer better quality snaps from your onboard camera too.

The Snapdragon 835 will be built on the new 10nm FinFET process which is done in collaboration with Samsung. 10 nanometers is about a thousand times smaller than a single strand of hair and are several orders smaller than current gen 14nm processors. In effect, this means they can now potentially cram more goodies into a phone like a bigger battery or even make it smaller and slimmer. On paper, the Snapdragon 835 will have a 27% improvement in performance and up to 40% less power consumption that its predecessor, the 820 while being 30% smaller. This potentially means enhanced efficiency and longer battery life all around.

The slides also reveal that the chip will have a quartet of high-performance cores running at 2.45GHz and four smaller 1.9GHz cores for handling the grunt work. On the imaging front, the chip will sport an Adreno 540 GPU that will support 4K video at 60fps and 10-bit 4K HEVC video. Another notable feature is Qualcomm’s Spectre Camera ISP that will offer better camera imaging quality in the bargain.

If prior examples are any indication, the Snapdragon 835 will likely power the latest flagship phones for many manufacturers though incumbents for the Malaysia market like Samsung’s Galaxy flagship phone series will continue relying on their Exynos processors while Huawei will continue developing their HiSilicon Kirin series chips for the foreseeable future.
